President Aadu passes gavel to Means Davis

by Mark Johnson

The guard changed Monday's meeting as outgoing president Aadu Allpere handed the gavel to new president, Means Davis. Means, in turn, presented Aadu with what Means termed "the most coveted award in Rotary: the past president's pin."

Before turning over the helm, Aadu gave his End Of The Year report, and it was a summary of what Aadu called "an outstanding year for Buckhead Rotary." Aadu said his year was the "highlight of his life." He thanked the members "who do more than eat lunch." (Aadu never has minced words.) Then he detailed the year's accomplishments by the numbers.

  • 40 meetings, 41% perfect attendance, 16 new members. We had three major donors and 43 Paul Harris Fellows.
  • We polished 3,200 apples that went to local teachers, boiled a lot of shrimp, celebrated at the Holiday Luncheon, and worked and played at the District Conference.
  • We gave 478 badges to Eagle Scouts, delivered 400 meals to the elderly, conducted a tournament for 400 basketball players, and scheduled a fabulous tennis tournament that, sadly, was rained out.
  • We arranged for 40 computers to be donated to inner city youth, we hosted a Rotoract conference, finished a Habitat House, continued our work with the Tommy Nobis Center, and collected trash on the Chattahoochee.
  • We went to Fiji, formed a sister Rotoract Club, met with our sister club, built a house, gave away 10,000 maternity kits, and wore funny clothes and hats. Every picture tells a story.
  • We endorsed three Ambassadorial Scholars, hosted a South Korean group exchange team, and sent our team to India.
  • And these are just the highlights. It was indeed a great year for the club, Aadu, and you have our thanks for your enthusiastic, tireless and effective leadership.
