The Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP) operates 82 schools across the US and has had extraordinary results in improving test scores from below to well above national averages and motivating low-income students to go on to college. Eighty-five percent of students who attend a KIPP school at some point during the 5th – 12th grade years enroll in college. KIPP schools are so popular that they have to use a lottery system to select students.
KIPP, like Rotary, has a four-point motto. Theirs is: Work Hard. Be Nice. No Excuses. High Expectations. KIPP students have a longer school day, have classes every other weekend, and attend school during the summer.
South Fulton Academy, a KIPP school founded in 2003, is Buckhead Rotary Club’s first three-year signature project. We will be providing textbooks, state-of-the-art teaching aids, and funding for field trips in addition to personal interaction through a variety of events. Our goal is to have a big impact with an organization that is, in turn, making a big impact in our community.
