BUCKHEAD PARKS INITIATIVE

Buckhead Rotary is undertaking a three-year signature project (2020-2022) to support programming and community engagement activities in public and private Buckhead parks. A total of $75,000 ($25,000 each year) will be awarded in a series of grants to local parks groups.

Interested parks groups should submit a grant application outlining the project, how it would positively impact the Buckhead community, cost of the project and how Buckhead Rotarian volunteers can be involved in the project. A committee of five Buckhead Rotarians – the Buckhead Parks Initiative Advisory Committee – will review applications submitted and select the projects that will be awarded grants. Buckhead Rotary will provide the funding on a reimbursement basis and reserves the right to award all or part of the funding requested.

Grant winners will be asked to provide brief project updates to the Parks Initiative Advisory Committee on a regular basis and to participate in at least one presentation on the park’s project at a Buckhead Rotary Club meeting.

There currently are more than 50 parks of all sizes in Buckhead. The City of Atlanta is not able to support all of the needs for Buckhead parks. As a result, it falls to local communities and residents to take an active role in supporting community parks for ongoing maintenance, events programming, parks enhancements and general parks “TLC.” Many of these neighborhood parks have local organizations that provide programs, activities and some upkeep for their neighborhood spaces. Buckhead Rotary 2020-2021 President Mark Johnson selected the Parks Initiative as his signature project in order to provide both volunteers and money to these neighborhood parks groups to carry out their work.

Three-year signature projects are chosen by each Buckhead Rotary president to not only provide financial support but also to garner volunteer opportunities for Club members, in line with Rotary’s mission of ‘Service Above Self.’ For the Parks Initiative, volunteer opportunities for Rotarians and their families could be as simple as painting and installing bird houses or planting a flower garden, to helping organize a neighborhood event and more.
